1. Scott's Point Marker
Inscription.
Further down the waterfront, past the old Chestertown wharf, was the African American community of Scott's Point. Here, Black watermen worked on the water, catching oysters, crabs and fish on the same waterways as their enslaved ancestors. Black-owned neighborhood businesses, like Levi Rodgers' 19th century oyster saloon, were supplied by their fresh catch. While many Scott's Point watermen worked out of smaller skiffs or log canoes they might have built themselves, some crewed on larger vessels like skipjacks or buyboats.

Today, the watermen's community is gone, but the oyster shells they left behind can still be seen in the yards and gardens of their bygone neighborhood.

Did you know?
In the 19th century, discrimination prevented African Americans from getting loans to buy bigger oyster dredging boats like skipjacks. Instead, many of them worked as crew for white captains or used smaller boats—like the Ric—to harvest oysters with tongs.
