Inscription. Constantin Silvestri conducted the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra 1961-1969. Silvestri, Romanian by birth, had learnt how to play the piano and organ before the age of six. He studied at the Bucharest Conservatoire and was already appearing as a conductor in his teens, making his debut in 1930 with the Bucharest Radio Symphony.

Noted for his magical powers as a conductor, he was also an outstanding and adventurous composer and pianist. Through extensive and taxing rehearsal, he raised the playing of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra to an international standard undertaking a tour of Europe in 1965 and recording extensively.

His orchestra members recall 'He gave us wings and inspiration and took us on a path we never thought to take', 'He mesmerised us. We were a transformed orchestra by the time he died.

As the epitaph on his grave reads: 'An outstanding musician and a remarkable man'.
