Inscription. Artist reflecting real life events in the seafaring community -- the wreck of the Alba (1938) and loss of the St Ives lifeboat shown by Alfred Wallis and photo. In each case the lifeboats were destroyed -- Caroline Parsons in 1908 and John and Sarah Elite Stych the following year, when seven of the crew of eight lost their lives The boat washed ashore at Gwithian near Godrevy lighthouse, where in accordance with tradition she was ceremonially burned.

The wood posts which are visible at low tide are remains of New Pier, built between 1862-1864. The structure was soon destroyed by north-easterly gales, necessitating the addition of the Victoria Extension on Smeaton's Pier, which was completed in 1890.
