Hit and Miss Engine
This green 1929, 2-horsepower Fuller Johnson stationary combustion engine drives a Jaeger water pump.

This 1-cylinder, 4-stroke engine is crank started and output is a turning gear. The one gallon fuel tank will power the efficient engine all day.

The engine only fires when needed and heavy flywheels keep that to a minimum. The engine is so efficient the Amish still use these.

The engine weights 450 pounds and can run at 600 rpm maximum. Heavy, slow, and with low horse power output these engines have gradually been replaced.

Jaeger Water Pump
The gray-colored water pump is gear driven from the hit and miss engine. It uses a single rubber diaphragm driven by a walking beam to suck up water.

Often called a mud pump, it could pump water even if full of mud, leaves, and twigs. It was mostly used to pump water from a well into water tanks for livestock. The set-up here recycles the water from the holding tank.

The engine has an "open crank." The crankshaft, connecting rod, camshaft, gears, governor, etc. are all completely exposed and can be viewed in operation when the engine is running.
