The Ivan Hearn Barn
This barn was built in the early 1900's. In 1947 Ivan Hearn purchased the barn from Rev. Cook. It was used to stable the Hearn's Dairy horses; King and later Duke, who faithfully delivered milk house to house seven days a week for many years. It was said that Duke knew the route better than the drivers. He retired in May 1959 when a truck was purchased until the discontinuation of home delivery in 1985. Hearn's Dairy bottled milk & cream, made butter, and graded & packed eggs. Hearn's Dairy was a family business with wife Kit and children Marilyn, Jim, Tom, Kathy & Wendy helping wherever needed: delivering milk, packing eggs or making & packaging butter.
In March of 2000, the Heritage Society approached the Hearn family to acquire the barn as a donation to the museum. It was raised on large metal beams, and then slowly pulled down Main Street on a Sunday morning by a tractor to this site. While cleaning out the barn the original under carriage of the milk wagon was discovered. It was refurbished to replicate the original wagon and donated to the Heritage Society.
To complete the Hearn's Dairy collection, their Egg grading machine was donated in 2006. On some days, anywhere from 2000 to 3000 eggs were graded and packed. Today the barn houses a variety of miscellaneous farming artifacts.
Thank you to the Hearn family for their continued support of the Museum.
