Amsterdam in Montgomery County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Welcome to the Chuck!
The Chuctanunda Creek Trail
From the Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook Bridge, you see where the mighty Chuctanunda meets the Mohawk River at the stone arch. These waterways were key to the city's past and future. The Mohawk is the only water level route through the Appalachian Mountains between Georgia and Maine. It was the natural path for the river, Erie Canal, turnpike, railroad, and superhighway, from America's heartland to the world.
The Chuctanunda Creek rises eighteen miles from the Mohawk. This elevation change created a source of water power for the earliest saw and grist mills that supported farmers and also powered the manufacturing mills that used the Mohawk River to receive raw materials and ship finished goods throughout the world. These waterways helped Amsterdam achieve world prominence in quality and quantity of products including carpets, brooms, and pearl buttons.
As you move along the Chuctanunda, you move through space and time. This trail leads through the heart of the City and includes beautiful scenery, waterfalls, dams, geology, ecology, and heritage from the earliest Native Americans to the latest repurposed industrial structures.
Follow the "Chuck" and enjoy!

Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook
The Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook (MVGO) is a unique park over the Erie Canal. In addition to one-of-a-kind artwork, its signage tells the story of the Mohawk Valley through examples of life in Amsterdam.
Twelve stations highlight historical topics and six areas focus on the neighborhoods seen from the MVGO. The compass in the north overlook and the "Wheel of Life" mosaic in the south overlook bring these themes together and show how communities grow and change.
