1. Greenwood School Marker
Inscription.
Greenwood School. . Public education began in Frederick County during the last decades of the 19th century. This marks the beginning of the public education system, as mandated by the Underwood Constitution. During the period the school district included three jurisdictions: Winchester and Frederick and Clarke Counties. Since transportation then was more difficult than it is today, small public school houses that the community used were constructed throughout the county. Thirty schools from this time period were surveyed. Most of these structures were abandoned or have been converted into private residences. As transportation improved, in the 20th century, schools were consolidated. Records indicated that the Greenwood School, which was once located on this site, was built on land that the Shawnee School District purchased from the Maloy family in 1909. The one-story building was constructed of rusticated concrete block and featured a standing seam metal roof with an open frame bell tower. This monument is constructed using rusticated concert blocks, decorative frieze panels, and a sill and lintel from the Greenwood School. The school bell is a replica of the original, which is now housed at Senseny Road Elementary School in Frederick County, Virginia.
