St. Francis, the Catholic patron saint of animals and the natural world, is remembered for his tenderness to and power over animals, which echo through the centuries. He devoted his life to the care of the poor and sick.
The Franciscans became a mendicant order vowed to poverty and humility. Missionaries of the order accompanied the earliest Spanish civil and military expeditions into the American Southwest beginning in 1540. Religious outposts were established under royal charter for conversion of the Indigenous people to Christianity.
Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument preserves the ruins of three missions established by the Franciscan order on the remote frontier of New Mexico in the 1620s.

The landscaping and fountain were made possible by the generous donations of the visitors to Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument.
San Francisco, el santo patrono católico de los animales y de la naturaleza, es recordado tanto por su ternura hacia los animales como por el poder que tenía sobre ellos; ambos han resonado a través de los siglos. San Francisco dedicó su vida al cuidado de los pobres y los enfermos.
Los franciscanos llegaron a ser una orden mendicante con votos de pobreza y humildad. A partir de 1540, misioneros de la orden formaron parte de las primeras expediciones españolas, tanto civiles como militares, a lo que hoy es el suroeste norteamericano.
