Minesing in Simcoe County, Ontario — Central Canada (North America)
Barracks/Storehouse
This building, along with the smithy and cookhouse, may have been built in 1814. They were somewhat short-lived, as it was reported in an 1820 Admiralty survey that they were burnt down. The function and age of the building remnants found here are to some extent conjecture, and there may have been later 19th century structures in the area given the artifacts found.
One thing for certain is that tonnes of supplies passed this way between 1814 and the mid-1820s. An inventory prepared by the British military in November 1815 stated that stores at Nottawasaga (Fort Willow) included 22,766 kg (50,192 lb.) of flour, 171 kg (377 lb.) of biscuits, 29,333 kg (64,669 lb.) of salt pork, 49 L (13 gallons) of rum, 177 packages of presents to exchange with Indigenous peoples, and 10 boxes of candles.
