Grosse Pines in Rochester Hills in Oakland County, Michigan — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
The Haven
On this site stood the home of Detroit industrialist Fred M. Shinnick and his wife, Lillian. Built in 1926, the English Tudor Revival-style residence was named The Haven. James A. Moynes & Company constructed the palatial 33,000-square-foot home. The Haven had 40 rooms and was built on 72-acres of farmland.
In 1932, the Shinnick's turned the estate into The Haven Sanitarium, which gained a world-wide reputation for its amenities and treatments for mental illness. The hospital closed in 1968. In 1973, a fire destroyed the structure. In 1977, developers bought the property and platted it into 142 home sites named Grosse Pines.
