Foxhurst in the Bronx in Bronx County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Railroads Over the Bronx River
Built in 1907, this bascule bridge is a type of drawbridge. It used a weight on one end to raise the structure when ships needed to pass through on the river. The bridge originally had three independent spans, one for each of railroad track. They were rarely lifted as ship traffic on the Bronx River declined. The bridge was eventually altered, with one of the lift spans completely removed and the remaining fixed in place.
Westchester Avenue Station
South of Starlight Park at the entrance to Concrete Plant Park is the Westchester Avenue station. The station was designed by the architect Cass Gilbert, who also designed the Woolworth Building and the US Supreme Court. It was built in 1908 and served by passenger trains until 1937. Look for its distinctive terra cotta tiles.
