Regarding Welcome to Tottenville. Ferry service between Tottenville (NY) and Perth Amboy (NJ) began as early as 1708 from the foot of Amboy Road. Later, with the expansion of the Staten Island Railroad, service was established at the foot of Main Street, Tottenville, the terminus of the railroad and the then commercial hub of the community. In 1896, the tracks were extended to the foot of Bentley Street where a larger terminal and an additional ferry slip were built to accommodate increased service. Ferry service to Perth Amboy was terminated here in 1963.
