Lock Haven in Clinton County, Pennsylvania — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
The American Civil War
More than a thousand Clinton County men served in the Civil War. PVT Cyrus M. Walker of the 7th PA Cavalry fought with the Army of the West at Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and Murfreesboro. PVT Walker died in 1946 at age 103. CPL DeWitt C. Johnson of the 23rd NY Infantry fought at the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. CPL Johnson later served in the eight-man Honor Guard in Philadelphia on April 22, 1865, for President Lincoln's funeral procession. Many soldiers did not come home. SGT John S. Bittner of the 52nd PA Infantry was killed in action at the Battle of Fair Oaks on May 31, 1862. The local GAR Post was named in his honor. LT Jacob Sigmund of the 7th PA Cavalry was killed at the Battle of Selma on April 2, 1865, just a week before Lee's surrender at Appomattox.
