1. World War II - Pacific Theater Marker
Inscription.
SSGT Frank J. DePolis of the Army Air Corps, PFC Daniel D. Confer of the 16th Coast Artillery, and S1C Demonte W. Temple of the USS Perry were at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. SSGT DePolis was killed. LT Jeraldine E. Jones of the Army Nursing Corps was awarded the Air Medal for bravery while evacuating the wounded in the Solomon Islands, making her the only county woman decorated in WW2 for courage under fire. PVT John G. Deeghan, 34th Infantry, was awarded a Silver Star for gallantry at Bataan and a Bronze Star for heroism at Corregidor. All gave some, some gave all. PFC Michael J. Russo, 130th Infantry, was killed during the Battle of Luzon in the Philippines on February 19, 1945. PFC Allen F. Chapman, 23rd Marines, whose brother Merrill fell at Omaha Beach on D-Day, was killed at Iwo Jima on February 27, 1945.
