Both species were growing in England as early as the 1650s, and it is believed that the first hybrid London plane seedling was discovered there. The tree's tolerance of city conditions soon made it popular everywhere. Even today many of the great boulevards of European and American cities are planted with London planes. The leaf of the London plane tree is the symbol of the New York City Parks Department., If allowed to reach full size, London planes will eventually grow more than 100 feet tall and 80 feet wide with broadly spreading horizontal branches.
