Inscription.
This is the oldest plant collection at NYBG, but it is always changing.

Conifers are trees and shrubs with needle-like or scale-like leaves that bear their seeds in cones. Descended from trees that grew more than 300 million years ago, conifer forests include the world's oldest and largest trees and cover more of Earth than any other type of forest. Rare and magnificent specimens make the nearly 40-acre Ross Conifer Arboretum one of the finest collections in the world.

This is the oldest plant collection at NYBG, first planted in the 1890s. As with all living collections, it is in a constant state of growth and change. The young Himalayan pine (Pinus wallichiana) on the hillside across this lawn was grown from a scion (a type of cutting) taken in 2000 from a venerable old specimen that grew here until 2018. NYBG's arborists continue to care for the historic trees in the Ross Conifer Arboretum using the most up-to-date tools and techniques, so that they may remain healthy and beautiful for as long as possible. New specimens are added to the collection each year to ensure that visitors will always shave the opportunity
