On June 24, 2015, Bobbie Oskarson of Longmont, Colorado, found a perfect, capsule-shaped diamond near this location.
Oskarson decided to visit the Crater of Diamonds after seeing the park on an Arkansas highway map. After about 20 minutes of surface searching, she found the 3/4" long diamond in a small mound of dirt. Oskarson named her gem Esperanza, after her niece and the Spanish word for hope.
In September 2015, the Esperanza Diamond was cut into a triolette shape, with 147 facets. The diamond was graded as D-colorless and internally flawless and mounted in a platinum pendant. This diamond, appraised at up to $1 million, has been called the most valuable ever found on U.S. soil.
