1. The Beginnings of Winckley Square Marker
William Cross planned the layout of Winckley Square to be similar to the formal squares in London. In 1807 he wrote draft regulations for the Square that would shape how the buildings looked and prevent industrial development in the area:
"The Houses in the square to be built three stories high and uniform in front as near as may be, so as to correspond in general appearance with the houses built by the said John Gorst and John Dalton and not to be of less annual value than forty pounds".
