1. Warkworth Cheese Country Marker

Inscription. These rolling hills are an ideal farming area for cheese production. In the late 1800's cheese factories were two to three miles apart, located by creeks and open from May to October. With horses and wagons farmers brought cans of milk to each patron-owned factory. The first Warkworth cheese factory opened in 1870, the second larger one, in 1880: the third and final one, in 1954 From 1945-1980 entrepreneur Doug Rowe developed the high quality cheese for which Warkworth was renowned. Other prominent well-known cheese makers were father and son, Curtis and Everett Fowler, who made cheese for a century, In 1993 the seniors of Warkworth area compiled a 100-page history of the industry entitled. "Warkworth Cheese Country"
