Together the Mertz Library Building, Fountain of Life, and All้e became a New York City Landmark in 2009.

The Tulip Tree All้e replanting celebrates and honors John J. Hoffee, our friend and Trustee of the LuEsther T. Mertz Charitable Trust.

Since 1903, distinguished trees have lined this drive. Tulip trees (Liriodendron tulipifera) were chosen to complement a venerable native specimen preserved on the site. Known as the mother tree, it is among the oldest and largest trees at NYBG, standing more than 135 feet tall.

Finally, in conversation with Garden curators and outside specialists, it became clear the trees needed to be replaced due to nature decline. Landscape architect Laurie Olin developed an elegant multiphase replanting plan. From 2021 to 2024 phased tree removals, plantings of new trees, and other site improvements, revitalized the All้e
