Arthur and Janet Ross Conifer Arboretum
The soft blue shade of Colorado spruces' needles is due to a waxy covering that helps the plant to conserve moisture by reflecting light.
Conifers are trees and shrubs with needle-like or scale-like leaves that bear their seeds in cones. The world's oldest and largest trees are conifers and cover more of Earth than any other type of forest. Magnificent specimens such as the mature Colorado blue spruce (picea pungens) growing here make this one of the finest collections of conifers in the world.
In the early 40-acre Ross Conifer Arboretum, scientists, students, and gardeners alike can study the diversity of the world's conifers. Today this irreplaceable century-old collection has been revitalized and restored. Using the most up-to-date methods of arboriculture, the Garden's arborists care for these mature pines, spruces, and firs so they will remain healthy and beautiful for decades to come.
