New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx in Bronx County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Daylily/Daffodil Walk
Daylilies and daffodils are important components of the herbaceous collections at the Garden.
This central area of the Arthur and Janet Ross Conifer Arboretum is named for the vibrant seasonal blooms that line the path in the warmer months. Daylilies and daffodils are wonderful companion plants: daffodils bloom in early spring, and daylilies emerge just as their predecessors are fading.
Daylilies have been the subject of Garden research. Arlow Burdette Stout (1876-1957) was a plant breeder and educator who studied cross-pollination and breeding in daylilies and other flowering plants over the course of his three-decade career at The New York Botanical Garden. Through his research, he successfully bred the first red daylily. Hemerocallis 'Theron' can be found nearby along Garden Way. His work contributed to the great popularity of daylilies as garden plants.
Daffodils have been a major fixture of the Garden landscape since the early 1900s, in places such as Daffodil Hill and Daffodil Valley, which includes the Liasson Narcissus Collection. They range from tiny species no more than three inches high found in the Rock Garden to taller, large-cupped daffodils such as Narcissus 'Gigantic Star', which grows here.
