These mature Nikko first would be difficult to establish in today's unpredictable climate.

First are native to the crisp, clean air of mountain habitats and are difficult to grow in urban environments, making the mature firs at The New York Botanical Garden especially remarkable. Planting of rare and unusual firs began here in the early 20th century. Highlights include a 65-foot-tall Greek fir (Abies cephalonica) a mature Caucasian fir (Abies nordmanniana) from western Asia, and a young fit (Abies pindrow) from the western Himalayan region. This grove of rare Nikko first (Abies Homolepis) from Japan was originally planted in the late 1920s.

Erected by New York Botanical Garden.
