1. Monument Nederland Indië / Dutch East Indies Monument marker text
De zon en het water verwijzen naar de relatie tussen de beide landen. De reliefs verwijzen naar de flora en fauna van Indonesie en de eilanden van de Archipel. De nieuwe toevoeging is ontworpen door Jan Kleingeld.
This monument was unveiled in 1935 as a tribute to JB van Heutsz, Governor-General of the former Dutch East Indies and regarded as a national hero for many years. Because he, as 'pacifier' of Aceh, is also held responsible by many for a black page in Dutch history in Aceh, the Oud-Zuid district council decided in 2001 to give the building by architect G. Friedhoff and sculptor FJ van Hall a different name and meaning: Monument Indie Nederland, in memory of the Dutch presence in the Indonesian archipelago. A period that began with the arrival of Cornelis de Houtman in 1596 and ended with the transfer of sovereignty of the Dutch East Indies to the United States of Indonesia in 1949. By mentioning the year 1945, the Proclamation of Soekarno in 1945 is recognized. The Monument Indie Nederland depicts the many memories of our colonial past in Indonesia and, with respect for the Indonesian heritage, points to the future.
The sun and the water refer to the relationship between the two countries. The reliefs refer to the flora and fauna of Indonesia and the islands of the Archipelago. The new addition was designed by Jan Kleingeld.

The Monument Indië-Nederland is located near the Olympiaplein in the southern part of Amsterdam. The monument was originally a memorial for General J. B. van Heutsz, who was the commandant of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army and is also known for conquering Aceh for the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1903 following the Aceh War.
