For a long time, the even Elder Keep was supposed to be situated below the Old Castle. But this was never proven. A first sign was delivered with the research of 2009. In the lower parts of the eastern wall of the castle, building mode, typical for the thirteenth century, was located, in form of the so-called "Buckelquader".

In January 2012 an excavation took place at the eastern wall of the castle. On a length of 12 meter, a foundation appeared in a depth up to five meters. It is differing completely in the building mode of the Old Castle. In its building ditch, finds of the thirteenth and fourteenth century were made. So for the first time, proof exists of a massively fortified building, in a word, a keep!

Reverse Side
These days, many parts of the medieval town of Bayreuth are not visible anymore. Although the structure and the post-medieval buildings are highly present, the roots of the first settlement are barely existent. The knowledge about it is vanishing. For example, it seemed assured that the "Old Keep" from the 13th century was situated below the Old Castle at the east of Maximilian Street. That remained unproven for a long time. Only

the excavations from 2009 and 2012 were able to give evidence of it.
