An Attraction for Visitors. Deep Creek Lake 100 Years. , Deep Creek Lake is the centerpiece of Garrett County’s reputation as an all-season destination. Visitors include “day-trippers”, families and groups of friends that stay for a number of days, and second-home owners that often visit frequently. A 2020 study estimated on the order of 1.4 million visitors per year to the County, with the Wisp Ski Resort also being a major attraction. The large majority of County visitors come from Maryland or near-neighbor states and, more specifically, from the metropolitan areas of Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Washington D.C (including northern Virginia)., Visitor surveys indicate a strong interest in vacationing in a scenic, relaxing environment which offers a variety of outdoor activities. On and around the lake, these activities include boating, fishing, camping, and hiking. Boating involves not only leisure cruising, but, for more the adventurous, the full spectrum of water sports (skiing, boarding, wake surfing, etc). And, “downstream” from the dam on the Youghiogheny river, there are both whitewater rafting and trout fly fishing opportunities. These latter opportunities are supported by water releases from the Deep Creek dam., Visitors, both tourists and owners of second homes, of course spend money on the local economy. The same 22020 study estimated annual visitor spending at roughly $315 million and a total economic contribution of roughly $360 million once indirect effects like job creation are considered. Further, the owners of second homes on and around the lake, along with an increasing number of full-time lake area residents, contribute substantially to Garret County revenues in terms of property taxes. Lastly, visitors and their activities spawn businesses and services that support the broader community., Deep Creek Lake and its visitors make a positive contribution to the larger community while enjoying the scenery, hospitality and services throughout Garrett County.
