New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx in Bronx County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
History of Conifers
This collection of trees is one of the oldest plantings at the Garden.
The remarkable diversity of conifers in the Arthur and Janet Ross Conifer Arboretum is owed to the collection's long history. Originally called the "Pinetum," it was one of the original collections developed at the Garden. Founding director Nathaniel Lord Britton himself designed the earliest plantings beginning in 1901, which included 90 to 100 species of conifers. Year after year, additional specimens were added to the collection.
The collection entered its next phase in 2004, when the wealth of rare, historic specimens within the collection was in need of greater care. Today the Garden's horticulturists continue to maintain this historic collection, ensuring its preservation for generations to come.
