Many of the rare and unusual conifers you will discover in this collection were part of a gift of 200 plants that NYBG received from Col. Robert H. Montgomery in the mid-1940s. In the followed, pioneering landscape architect Marian Coffin artfully placed the trees among the dramatic rock outcroppings and towering native trees of this site. She aimed to create a pleasing respite from the city and a showcase for these beautiful and sometimes quirky plants.

Today the expanded collection, redesigned by landscape architect Shavaun Towers in 2004, comprises more than 400 conifers of more than 235 varieties. Young and mature pines, spruces, firs, cedars, cypresses, junipers, hemlocks, and other garden conifers demonstrate the diversity and resilience of these unique trees.
