Asian long-horned beetle (ALB) is an invasive species accidentally imported to the U.S. in the 1990s. These inch-long spotted black beetles lay their eggs in tree bark Larvae then tunnel into the trees and feed on them from within. American native maples, sugar (Acer saccharum), tod (Acer rubrum), and silver (Acer saccharinum), are especially vulnerable to ALB attacks, not only in the forest but in backyards and city streets., ALB lurks and lays its tiny eggs in wood piles. To help prevent the spread of ALB, do not move firewood or lumber great distances. Buy wood near where you plan to use it, ideally within 101 miles. Federal ALB quarantines in New York State prohibit carrying firewood more than 50 miles from its origin. Inspect trees carefully in summer and fall for signs of infestation, such as round exit holes about a centimeter wide, sawdust at the base of the tree, and the beetles themselves. NYBG staff are on constant lookout for ALB and other invasive pests in the Garden's living collections. The best defense against pests and disease is strong well-watered and tended trees that are resilient to attack.
