The Dodge Family has been supporting The New York Botanical Garden, primarily through the Cleveland H. Dodge Foundation, since the Garden's founding in 1891. William E. Dodge, Jr., Cleveland H. Dodge's father, was one of the founders of NYBG, and served on the Board from 1895 until his death in 1903. Cleveland Dodge's granddaughter, Ruth Rea Howell, was an avid ga dener who loved NYBG. The Cleveland H. Dodge Foundation helped to establish the Ruth Rea Howell Vegetable Garden in her memory in 1993.

In 2016 and 2017, a special grant to this garden was made by the Directors of the Foundation in memory of Robert Garrett as part of the Edible Academy development project. Rob Garrett was a beloved NYBG Trustee for 27 years (1987-2014), Vice President of the Cleveland H. Dodge Foundation, and nephew of Mrs. Howell.
