1. T. A. Havemeyer's Lilacs Marker

Inscription. Theodore A. Havemeyer (1868-1936), a knowledgeable horticulturist and lilac devotee, started breeding lilacs on his Long Island estate around 1910. His dedication led to over 50 new cultivars prized to this day for their rich colors and large single flowers. Havemeyer and his family donated many lilacs to NYBG and this Lilac Collection was established in 1949 with hundreds of plants from his estate. Havemeyer hybrids include dark red-purple 'Sarah Sands' and magenta 'Lady Lindsay', which boasts perhaps the reddest flower buds of any lilac.
