Children of all ages can learn to dig, grow, and harvest vegetables, fruit, and herbs in this garden.

The Ruth Rea Howell Vegetable Garden is the centerpieces of the Edible Academy. These beds include the Children's Gardening Program Garden, Green Thumb Garden, and Global Garden. In more than 60 years of our children's gardening program, generations of visitors have been encouraged to dig in the dirt, plant seeds, nurture growing plants, and harvest delicious food. Seasonal, hands-on lessons accompany the gardening activities to teach culinary skills, encourage exploration of the world, and inspire scientific inquiry.

We employ organic gardening practices throughout the garden. We make and apply compost, use mulch to suppress weeds, and rotate crops to balance nutrients and avoid disease. We grow companion plants to attract beneficial insects such as wasps and ladybugs that pollinate the food plants or feed on pests.

The School for Children's Gardening is made possible by Louise and Henry Loeb.
