Inscription. The Sisters' Shop, built in 1834, was a 2 1⁄2 story brick building which served as the village's first communal laundry. The Sisters' Shop could be reached from the Dwelling's west door via a stone walkway. Located just outside the cellar door was a cistern with a hand pump for easy water access. In 1885, there were 20,000 silkworms housed in the attic. That year, lightning struck the building, taking off most of the ceiling in the ironing room. Several Shaker children had just left the ironing room before the lightning struck.
