Village of Xaxaba: Island of the Tall Trees
| | The Okavango Delta | |
The name "Xaxaba" (pronounced kah-KAH-bah) means "island of the tall trees".
The area of Xaxaba supports tall trees in contrast to the scrub trees of the drier surrounding territories.
This has given the local people the opportunity to build their homes with long beams of wood and to fashion canoes called "mokoros".
The village of Xababa has become a popular site for international travelers. Villagers maintain their traditional lifestyle alongside a large popular eco-tourism center.
The eco-tourism industry has provided a boos to the economy of African nations, but add the burden of preserving the ecosystems for visitors to enjoy. Sometimes the very act of traveling through the countryside takes its toll on the environment.
