Inscription.
After retiring from 31 years of teaching in the spring of 1987, Mrs. Cofield was asked to help to begin a program for poverty stricken, hopeless and (at times), helpless New Haven residents who were sick with the HIV virus or who had fullblown AIDS. The church-based program, AIDS Interfaith Network, was conceived and founded by Mrs. Cofield that year. In 1990 the city renamed the cross street formerly known as Gill Street Elsie W. Cofield Way.
