With snips of her scissors and skillful sewing, the dressmaker made fashionable clothes for women in the community. At a time when job opportunities for women were limited, dressmaking was a common career that paid well. When business was good, the dressmaker could hire seamstresses to assist.

The first "ready-to-wear" dresses were sold in catalogs in the 1890s. Before that, all dresses were custom made for women.
