Mahalia Jackson
October 26, 1911 - January 27, 1972
Mahalia Jackson was born in New Orleans and became known as "The World's Greatest Gospel Singer." Through concerts and recordings, her powerful voice introduced black gospel music to an international public. She sang in support of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement.
