1. The Edmonstone Women 'Conservationists' Marker
Inscription. Eliza (1808-1870), Anne-Mary (1810-1830), Helen (c.1813-1879), Bethia (c.1823-1839)

Mixed heritage Arawak nobility from Demerara, Eliza and Helen prevented the destruction of Charles Waterton's letters and natural history collection thus ensuring the survival of his legacy.

Married to Anne-Mary, Waterton used the vast fortune made by the sisters' father, plantation owner and enslaver, Charles Edmonstone, to develop and fund his nature reserve.

The women frequently visited their sister-in-law Mrs Carr, whose house once stood on this site.
