The 5th Ohio Cavalry served throughout the Atlanta Campaign. Acting as the eyes of the Union forces, elements of the 5th Ohio were posted to Allatoona on picket and communication duty where they fought in the Battle of Allatoona Pass on October 5th, 1864.
