Shades Of Rhythm Story
"Shades of Rhythm" Amphitheater Story
| | Kohlmann Park | |
Two architecture students at Iowa State University, Ann Cashman of Waverly and Darian Lu of Shanghai, China, created the unique plan, winning an architectural design competition in the process. Their 18" by 90" design of a community amphitheater features curved wooden ribs accented with colored glass. When the facility is not in use, the artistic structure resembles a sculpture in the park, offering a dramatic view of the river as light reflects off the colored glass accents.
This facility enhances the summer Concerts in Kohlmann series that showcases the Greater Waverly Municipal Band. The band, which organized in 1986, is comprised of area high school, college, and adult volunteers. The band's members and supporters were a major driving force for the project.
The summer concerts promote the arts and enhance the community's quality of life, bringing together residents of all ages for an evening of music, entertainment, and refreshments along the scenic Cedar River. The amphitheater provides a long-needed acoustical background for the municipal band and other music or drama groups performing during Kohlmann Park events.
The amphitheater's central location in the community makes it easily accessible to walkers and cyclists, including those using the nearby Waverly Pedestrian Trail system.
