1. American Elm Marker
Inscription.
Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the majestic American elm was the signature street tree of the nation's cities and towns. In the wild, American elms often grow in wet areas and along stream banks, but are also adaptable to a variety of urban conditions.

In the late 1800s, a fungus native to Asia travelled to Europe, and in the 1930s was first detected in Ohio. Known as Dutch elm disease, the fungus spread across the United States, killing the majority of elms lining streets. There are still many elms in forests and other natural areas, including several large old trees in the Forest such as this fine specimen, which stands 90 feet tall and is approximately 150 years old. Recent research has developed some disease-resistant varieties, which may once again become popular street trees.
