More about this memorial. This bronze plaque is one of more than a half-dozen individual markers to World War I veterans that can be found surrounding a newer war memorial on the north end of Hodges Park. It could not be determined how these markers were originally displayed, or when they were placed in Hodges Park.
Regarding Corp. Mel Tierney. Details of Mel Tierney's service in World War I could not be ascertained. He is one of three Park Ridge men who died in World War I as members of the 132nd Infantry, a famed Illinois regiment that traced its roots to the Civil War.
Tierney is the namesake of the Park Ridge-based American Legion post that erected this memorial as well as the several others nearby in Hodges Park. The Tierney Post remains active to this day, sponsoring an annual Memorial Day service at these memorials.
