The Church as a Road!
Kirkstall Abbey
Travellers passed through the west door, along the centre of the nave and out through the opened up east window. Can you imagine what the monks would have thought about merchants and farmers passing through their church with their carts and animals? The road was only moved in the 19th century to the present day A65, which today crosses through the Abbey precinct.
Caption: Victorians in the nave after the east wall had been rebuilt the 1890s. Prior to the conservation works, the road to Leeds ran through the church and passers-by scratched their initials on the stone pillars.
