Helper in Carbon County, Utah — The American Mountains (Southwest)
Helper Senior Citizens Park
The girls noticed a vacant lot on Main Street that was an eyesore littered with old cars and trash. The girls and leaders inquired of the owner, Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, stating they would like to build a park there. They replied, "We would be pleased to donate the lot for this worthwhile project." Next the Troop met with the Helper City Council who was full of enthusiasm for this project too and they would supply the needed water.
On April 20, 1973 work began on the park with the young girls weeding, removing stumps, rocks and coal. They then raked and filled the land and five months later, on Arbor Day, they planted the first tree. (Still standing by the bleachers)
During the next three years the girls sought donations, fundraised and maintained the park by hand watering it, planting grass, trees, flowers, adding tables and benches. They put many long hours into the park and it was hard work. Later, as funds became available a sprinkling system was added with the help of the girl's fathers and Carbon Plumbing.
This park was completed June 1975 and the Troop entered and won multiple state and district competitions and awards from: The Salt Lake Tribune, Utah State University, Utah Association of the Garden Club, Utah Association of Nurserymen and the prestigious Golden Spade award.
This project allowed most of the girls to earn the distinction of "First Class Girl Scout" the highest honor ranking attainable.
This plaque dedicates the park's 40th year anniversary, its history, humble beginnings and the beautiful recreation facility it has evolved into today.
