Derry in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Derry Community Park
Est. 1968
During the first half of the twentieth century this field was known as the Derry Borough Athletic Field, and was home to the Derry Rams football team. In 1956 the Derry Borough High School (Rams) combined with the Derry Township High School (Eagles), and the Derry Area Trojans were born. For the next decade the old Athletic Field was used for other recreational & sporting activities such as baseball and softball. In December, 1965 Derry Borough received a $20,000 grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation to revitalize the park with a new track, ice skating park, picnic areas, basketball court, tennis courts, night lighting and restrooms. In 1968 Directors from the Derry Community Development Corporation voted to rename the Athletic field, Derry Community Park. A 2016 Greenways, Trails and Recreation Grant funded the first set of major renovations in 50 years, providing an updated park for Derry's community for years to come.
