1. Westgate Marker

Inscription. The Westgate was built after the French Raid of 1338, and was an important entrance into the medieval town. It was thought that in 1415 Henry V and his army departed through Westgate on their way to victory at Agincourt.

The sailors and passengers of the Mayflower and her sister ship, Speedwell, passed through Westgate on their way to America in 1620.

Westgate Hall once stood in St. Michael's Square. It was a market hall where foreign merchants came to buy fine English woollen cloth. In 1634, the hall was taken down and rebuilt here. Tree-ring dating has shown it was built in the early 1400s.
