Regarding The British Methodist Episcopal Church of Canada.
The church was built by the local Black community of former slaves, who made their way north and crossed to freedom in Canada before and during the American Civil War of 1861-1865. Originally named the Methodist Mission Church, in 1856 it was moved on logs to this location. In 1983 the chapel was renamed after the Canadian-born American, R. Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943), a leading figure in 20th-century North American sacred music; a composer, choir director and piano player. Mr. Dett attended church here until he moved to USA at age 11.
Architecturally, the Church is very basic in design and in style is close to Upper Canada
Georgian. It is well built and the interior is in excellent condition. This is an OHA designated heritage property.
