1. Eliza’s Courageous Decision Marker
At the time of her husband’s death, only thirteen acres were cleared and the farm was indebted. Eliza had four small children and a temporary dwelling in which to live. She made the courageous decision to stay and keep her family together. She and her young children planted the garden, tended the animals, and harvested the wheat and other crops. Eliza committed to her children’s education and development of character.
Years later, President Garfield’s first act after receiving the oath of office was to give his devoted mother a well-deserved kiss.
