Moreland Hills in Cuyahoga County, Ohio — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
The Larger World Calls
As James grew, life in Orange Township seemed too small. The larger world began calling him away through the books he read or stories he heard. One favorite, The Pirates Own Book, lured James to envision a life at sea. At age 16 he traveled to the Cleveland waterfront to pursue this dream. His life on the family farm was drawing to a close. His life as an educator, minister, soldier, congressman, and president was beginning.
