A Fashionable Resort
When a mineral spring was discovered at Above Bar in the 1740s, doctors prescribed "taking the waters" as a cure for all kinds of illness, such as cholera and gout. From 1751 sea bathing was very popular and bathing houses were built near the shore.
In the evening, entertainments such as dances and card games were held at the Assembly Rooms or The Dolphin Hotel in the High Street.
'The Rooms are large and handsome and exceedingly chaste in design the promenade grounds in front, though not extensive, ale very pleasing, and furnish delightful views of the neighbouring shores.' -- Philip Brannon
